Mardan Map Poster & Print
Mardan lies in the Peshawar Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on a broad plain watered by irrigation canals and by streams flowing down from the hills to the north. From above, the city is a dense core of streets and markets spreading outward along the main roads, surrounded by a patchwork of fields where sugarcane, wheat and tobacco are grown.
The city grew around a cantonment established in the nineteenth century as the home of the Corps of Guides, a well-known frontier regiment, and the cantonment's more orderly layout still stands apart from the tighter streets of the old town. A stream known as the Kalpani runs past the city, adding a winding line to the map.
Mardan lies at the heart of the ancient region of Gandhara. Nearby are the Buddhist monastery ruins of Takht-i-Bahi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the rock edicts of the emperor Ashoka at Shahbaz Garhi.
