Maumere Map Poster & Print
Maumere is the main town of Sikka Regency on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara. It lies on the island's north coast, spread along the shore of Maumere Bay. The streets gather around the harbour, and green, hilly country rises behind them. Small islands dot the bay, adding scattered shapes to the sea on the map.
Flores has a largely Catholic population, a legacy of Portuguese and later missionary activity, and churches play a large part in the town's life. In December 1992, a powerful earthquake and tsunami struck the region, causing severe damage in Maumere and in communities on the islands of the bay, and the town was largely rebuilt afterward.
