Mechanicsville lies in Hanover County, Virginia, just northeast of Richmond. From above, it looks like a typical American suburb grown along a main road. U.S. Route 360, the Mechanicsville Turnpike, runs through it, lined with shopping centres, and Interstate 295 loops around the eastern edge of the area. Curving subdivision streets and cul-de-sacs branch off on both sides, with woodland in between.
The community takes its name from a nineteenth-century crossroads with a blacksmith's and mechanic's shop. It is best known historically for the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek, also called the Battle of Mechanicsville, fought in June 1862 during the Seven Days campaign of the Civil War. Parts of the battlefield are preserved as part of Richmond National Battlefield Park.
