Miamisburg lies south of Dayton on the Great Miami River, and the river sets the direction of the town. Its historic downtown is a small, regular grid close to the water, with bridges crossing to the opposite bank. Further out, residential neighbourhoods and business parks spread across the gentle hills and along the interstate corridor.
The best-known landmark is the Miamisburg Mound, an Adena earthwork on a ridge south of downtown and the largest conical burial mound in Ohio. The town is also known for Mound Laboratory, a former federal nuclear research site whose grounds have since been redeveloped for business use.
