Mildura Map Poster & Print
Mildura lies on the south bank of the Murray River in the far northwest of Victoria, in a semi-arid region known as Sunraysia. The city began in 1887 as an irrigation settlement planned by the Canadian-born Chaffey brothers. Their design is still clear from above, with a regular grid of numbered streets crossed at right angles by broad avenues.
The most prominent of these is Deakin Avenue, a long, wide boulevard running inland from the river through the heart of the city. Beyond the urban grid, rectangular irrigation blocks of vineyards, citrus orchards and dried-fruit plantations spread across the flat land. Their water comes from the river and from channels that follow the same geometry.
