Moussoro is the chief town of Barh el Gazel province in west-central Chad, north-east of Lake Chad. It lies in the Sahel, where sparse grassland and sand dominate and rain falls only in a short season. From above, the town is a loose arrangement of compounds and sandy streets. It spreads out across the ground rather than packing densely together.
The province takes its name from the Bahr el Ghazal, a long, usually dry valley that once connected Lake Chad with the Bodélé Depression to the north-east. Herding has long been central to life in the area. Livestock routes and seasonal movements shape the rhythm of the region as much as the town itself does.
