Mudgal Map Poster & Print
Mudgal is in the Raichur district of northern Karnataka, on the dry, rock-strewn Deccan plateau. The map is shaped by its fort. Remains of walls and a moat outline a large enclosure, and the old town's narrow, winding lanes fill the space in and around it. Newer streets extend outward along the roads to neighbouring towns.
The fort was contested for centuries, particularly between the Vijayanagara Empire and the Bahmani and later Deccan sultanates, which fought repeatedly over the fertile Raichur Doab. That long history left layered fortifications, and the town grew in close relation to them. Few places of this size show their defences so clearly in plan.
