Muncie lies in east-central Indiana, on the White River. From above, the city is a classic Midwestern grid of straight streets and blocks, broken by the winding river, which curves through the north side of downtown. Parks and trails follow its banks, while railway lines and old industrial sites cut across the grid at angles.
Muncie is home to Ball State University, whose campus fills a large area north-west of downtown. The Ball brothers, whose glass jars were made here for decades, shaped much of the city's history. In the 1920s Muncie became famous as the subject of Middletown, the sociological study by Robert and Helen Lynd of typical American life.
