Murray sits in the middle of the Salt Lake Valley, directly south of Salt Lake City, on the valley's well-known coordinate grid of numbered streets. The Jordan River runs along its western side, bringing a green corridor of parkland and trails, while Interstate 15 and the TRAX light rail line cut north to south through the city.
The city grew up around smelting; a pair of tall smokestacks was its landmark until their demolition in 1999, and the former smelter site is now home to the Intermountain Medical Center.
