Muskego lies in southeastern Waukesha County, a short drive southwest of Milwaukee, and water is the first thing you notice on its map. Little Muskego Lake sits near the northern part of the city, ringed by residential streets and bays. Farther south, Big Muskego Lake forms a broad, marshy shape that the built-up area goes around.
Between and around the lakes, the city is a mix of suburban subdivisions, curving cul-de-sacs, parks and remaining farmland. Unlike the older grids of Milwaukee, Muskego's streets follow shorelines and wetland edges. Wisconsin's glacial landscape left behind this uneven pattern of land and water.
