Neckarsulm lies just north of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg, where the small Sulm river flows into the Neckar. The town's name comes from that confluence. The old centre is compact, and at its heart stands the Deutschordensschloss, the former castle of the Teutonic Order. It now houses the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum.
Industry takes up a lot of space on the map. The Audi plant, which grew out of the NSU works named after the town, is a huge block of halls and internal roads, almost as large as the old town itself. Vineyards on the slopes, the canalised Neckar and the railway and motorway lines complete the picture.
Neckarsulm is also the headquarters of the Schwarz Group, the retail company behind Lidl and Kaufland. For a town of its size, it is unusually closely linked to well-known brands.
