Neumünster Map Poster & Print
Neumünster sits almost exactly in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, and its map shows it as a crossroads. Railway lines come in from Hamburg, Kiel, Heide and Bad Segeberg and meet at the station. The A7 motorway runs along the western side. Inside this frame, a compact centre has formed around the Großflecken, a long open square, and the old parish church.
The name refers to a new minster, the monastery founded here in the twelfth century by the missionary Vicelin. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the town was known for cloth and leather production, and some of its former mills still stand along the small River Schwale, which winds through the centre.
