Nicolás Romero is a municipality in the State of México, on the north-western edge of the Mexico City metropolitan area. Its landscape is uneven, rising from the valley toward wooded mountains, and on a map this shows immediately. The municipality takes its name from a nineteenth-century liberal fighter who was executed during the French intervention in Mexico. Over recent decades it grew rapidly as families moved out from the capital in search of space and more affordable housing, filling the hillsides with colonias linked by a small number of main roads.
