Nīlī is the capital of Daykundi province, in the mountainous centre of Afghanistan. On a map the town is small and linear, set in a valley with steep, empty terrain rising on either side. Roads follow the valley floor and the easiest gradients, and the built-up area thins quickly as the ground climbs.
Daykundi is among the most remote provinces in the country, and Nīlī functions as its administrative centre, connecting scattered villages across the highlands.
