Nivelles Map Poster & Print
Nivelles, in Walloon Brabant south of Brussels, grew around an abbey founded in the seventh century by Itta and her daughter Gertrude. The town plan still reflects that origin. A ring of boulevards encloses the historic centre, and inside it the streets converge on the large block of the collegiate church and the Grand-Place beside it. Beyond the ring, residential districts and roads fan out into farmland.
The Collegiate Church of Sainte-Gertrude is one of the largest Romanesque churches in Belgium, with a long nave and a massive westwork. On its tower stands Jean de Nivelles, a mechanical bell-striking figure who has become a local symbol. The town is also known for tarte al djote, a savoury tart made with cheese and chard.
