Novara lies in eastern Piedmont, between the rivers Sesia and Ticino, on the plain between Turin and Milan. The historic centre sits on a slight rise above the surrounding land. Its layout still shows the Roman grid of the ancient town, with streets crossing at right angles in the core. On the map, this compact centre is clearly defined.
