Ocotal Map Poster & Print
Ocotal is the capital of Nueva Segovia, the northernmost department of Nicaragua, close to the border with Honduras. It sits in a highland valley surrounded by pine-covered hills, and its name refers to the ocote pine that grows across the region.
The town centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of streets around a central plaza with its church. From there, the blocks extend outward until the terrain and the river valleys interrupt them. On a monochrome map the grid appears tidy and dense, framed by irregular roads winding into the hills.
An Ocotal map poster also carries a place in history. In 1927 the town was the site of the Battle of Ocotal between Augusto César Sandino's forces and US Marines, often cited as one of the first organised dive-bombing attacks. Today it is a regional hub for coffee and trade.
