Opelika grew up around the railroad in the nineteenth century, and the map still shows it. Rail lines cross the centre of town, and the historic downtown lines up alongside them in a tight grid of short blocks. Beyond that core, streets loosen into curving subdivisions and wide commercial roads, with Interstate 85 sweeping across the southern side on its way between Montgomery and Atlanta.
As the seat of Lee County, Opelika shares its western edge with Auburn, and on a map the two towns run together into one continuous street network.
