Perote sits high on the plateau of western Veracruz, in a dry basin that feels far from the humid coast the state is known for. The town itself is compact, a grid of blocks around a central square. The fortress of San Carlos de Perote is the best-known feature. It was built in the eighteenth century to guard the colonial road between the port of Veracruz and the interior.
