Phong Điền lies in the northern part of the Huế area in central Vietnam. It is a long strip of land running from the Truong Son uplands in the west down to sandy coastal ground and the Tam Giang lagoon in the east. From above, the landscape falls into bands: hills, then a belt of rice paddies and villages, then a thin line of dunes before the sea.
National Route 1 and the north–south railway cross this lowland belt side by side. The main settlement grows along them, with village clusters strung between the fields. Rivers and irrigation channels come down from the hills toward the lagoon. The result is a pattern of fine, branching lines rather than a dense street grid.
