Ponorogo lies in the west of East Java, in a fertile valley between the volcanic massifs of Lawu and Wilis. From above, the town follows the traditional Javanese plan. The alun-alun, the large open square, sits at the centre, main roads extend from it in straight lines, and a grid of residential streets fills the space between them before giving way to rice fields.
Ponorogo is famous as the home of Reog, a dramatic performance in which a dancer carries a huge tiger-head mask topped with peacock feathers. Reog is closely tied to the town's identity.
