Pontypool Map Poster & Print
Pontypool is in Torfaen, southeast Wales, where the valley of the Afon Lwyd widens as it goes south. On a map, the town follows the river and the valley floor. Terraced streets climb the slopes on either side in long, parallel rows. Pontypool Park, a large green space next to the town centre, fills much of the frame.
The town grew with the iron and coal industries of the valley. In the eighteenth century it was known for Pontypool japanware, a type of lacquered metal. Further up the valley, Blaenavon is part of a UNESCO World Heritage industrial landscape. Pontypool is also known for its rugby club, which has a long history in Welsh rugby.
