Poznań lies on the Warta River in western Poland, and the river separates the historic parts of the city. On the east side, Ostrów Tumski, an island between the Warta and the Cybina, holds the cathedral where Poland's early rulers were buried. West of the river, the Old Town surrounds a large market square, laid out in a regular grid after the city received its thirteenth-century charter.
Around the Old Town, nineteenth- and early twentieth-century districts add wide boulevards and a formal imperial quarter of monumental buildings. Poznań's planners also kept green wedges that follow valleys into the city, and on the map they appear as long open strips. East of the centre, Lake Malta, an artificial lake used for rowing, forms a clean, elongated shape.
The city is known for the Renaissance town hall on the Old Market Square, where two mechanical goats butt heads every day at noon, and as one of the oldest centres of the Polish state.
