Pozzallo sits on the southern coast of Sicily in the province of Ragusa, facing the open sea toward Malta, about a hundred kilometres away. From above, the coastline is long and nearly straight, lined with sandy beaches, and the town stretches along it in a band of streets parallel to the shore. The harbour to the east handles regular ferries to Malta.
The town’s old heart grew around the Torre Cabrera, a medieval coastal watchtower that still stands by the sea. Streets run in a fairly regular pattern back from the waterfront, with the seafront promenade forming a continuous edge. Pozzallo is also known as the birthplace of Giorgio La Pira, the politician who served as mayor of Florence.
