Raigarh lies in the east of Chhattisgarh, close to the border with Odisha, on the banks of the Kelo River. On a map the river curves along the town's edge, while the main railway line between Mumbai and Howrah runs straight through it, separating older neighbourhoods from newer residential colonies and industrial areas.
The town was once the seat of a princely state whose rulers were notable patrons of music and dance. The court of Maharaja Chakradhar Singh gave rise to the Raigarh gharana of Kathak, and the annual Chakradhar Samaroh festival still honours that legacy. In recent decades steel and power plants have made Raigarh an industrial centre for the region.
