Ramotswa sits in Botswana's South-East District, a short drive south of Gaborone and close to the border with South Africa. From above it does not form a neat grid. The town is the traditional seat of the Balete people. Its layout still reflects the ward system found in many Tswana settlements, where the kgotla, the customary meeting place, is central to community life.
