Rensha lies in the rural part of Chongqing municipality, in the country east of the main city, where parallel ridges and valleys run roughly north-east to south-west. From above, towns in this landscape are rarely square. They stretch along the valley bottoms, and their streets bend around the foot of the hills.
The town centre is a dense knot of roads and buildings. Lanes branch out towards farmland, and the terraced hillsides around it show as fine, stepped contour-like lines. Small streams and ponds collect in the lowest ground, and regional roads link the town to its neighbours through gaps in the ridges.
