Risca Map Poster & Print
Risca lies in the lower Ebbw Valley in south Wales, within Caerphilly County Borough, where the valley narrows between steep hillsides before opening toward Newport. The town stretches along the valley floor, and on a map its main features run in parallel: the Ebbw River, the railway, the main road and the Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
Like much of the south Wales valleys, Risca grew with coal mining and industry during the nineteenth century, and its terraced streets reflect that period. The Ebbw Valley Railway reopened to passengers in 2008, restoring a rail link through the town. Above it rises Twmbarlwm, a prominent hill with an ancient earthwork on its summit.
