Rivas-Vaciamadrid lies southeast of Madrid along the A-3 motorway. On a map it has two distinct parts. The original small settlement of Vaciamadrid sits down near the river. Most of the modern town, Rivas, spreads across a plateau in a regular pattern of long avenues, large roundabouts and housing estates, mostly built since the 1980s, when the population grew very quickly.
The municipality lies within the Southeast Regional Park, which protects the lower valleys of the Jarama and Manzanares rivers. Gypsum cliffs, wetlands and former gravel pits turned into lagoons, such as the Laguna del Campillo, lie at the edge of the town.
