Roanoke Rapids grew up beside the falls of the Roanoke River in northeastern North Carolina, where the water drops enough to power industry. The river forms the town's northern edge on the map, and the dams upstream hold back Roanoke Rapids Lake and, farther on, Lake Gaston. Streets extend south from the river in a mostly regular pattern.
The town's early economy centered on textile mills. A strike and union campaign at one of its mills in the 1970s inspired the film Norma Rae. Earlier still, the Roanoke Canal was built to carry boats around the rapids, and its route is now preserved as a trail and museum.
