Rudolstadt lies in the valley of the Saale in Thuringia, where the river winds between wooded slopes. For centuries it was the residence of the Counts, later Princes, of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Their palace, Heidecksburg, still stands on the hill above the old town. On a map, the town stretches along the valley, with the river and the rail line running parallel beside it.
Rudolstadt has a notable place in German literary history. In 1788 Schiller and Goethe first met here, in the house of the Lengefeld family. Today the town is widely known for the Rudolstadt-Festival, one of Europe's largest folk, roots and world music festivals, held each July.
