Rybnik Map Poster & Print
Rybnik lies in the southwest of the Silesian Voivodeship, near the Czech border, and grew through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a centre of coal mining. Unlike some Silesian cities, it has a clear historic heart: a market square surrounded by streets that fan out toward districts once built around individual mines.
The city's name is linked to fish ponds, and water still plays a notable role on the map. The most prominent feature is the Rybnik Reservoir, created in the 1970s to serve the nearby power station, which forms a long body of water on the western side. The small Nacyna river threads through the centre.
Rising above the old town, the twin towers of the Basilica of St. Anthony are among the city's best-known sights. Created in the 1970s for the local power station, the reservoir forms a large, irregular body of water on the western side of the city, now also used for recreation.
Scattered districts
Former mining settlements spread across the city limits, separated by woodland and open ground, giving the map a patchwork of clusters rather than one continuous mass.
