Saint-Égrève lies just northwest of Grenoble, on the right bank of the Isère, where the river leaves the city and heads down its valley. From above, the town shows a clear contrast. Flat, densely built land stretches along the river and the motorway, while mountains rise abruptly behind the last streets.
Those mountains belong to the Chartreuse massif. The prominent cliffs of the Néron stand above the town and limit its growth to the north. Neighbourhoods fill the narrow strip between the slopes and the Isère. A dense network of roads and rail lines follows the valley towards Voiron and Lyon.
