São Bento lies in the Baixada Maranhense, a wide lowland region in northern Maranhão made up of floodplains, lakes and seasonal wetlands. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on slightly higher ground, surrounded by flat, open land that changes character with the seasons.
In the rainy months the fields around the town flood and connect with nearby lakes, turning much of the landscape into shallow water. In the dry season, the same land becomes grazing ground. On a map, lakes and watercourses break up the countryside and give the area its distinctive shape.
