Sarzana lies in the far east of Liguria, in the Val di Magra near the border with Tuscany. The town's historic centre is compact and roughly rectangular, crossed lengthwise by its main street, and it is still partly enclosed by fortifications. The Magra river runs to the west across a broad, flat plain toward the sea.
Two fortresses dominate the town. The Fortezza Firmafede, also known as the Cittadella, stands at the edge of the old town, while the Fortezza di Sarzanello sits on a hill above it. Sarzana lies on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route, and the ruins of the Roman city of Luni are close by on the plain.
