Sertolovo lies on the Karelian Isthmus, a short distance north of St Petersburg. From above it looks like a town cut out of the forest. Residential blocks and streets sit in clearings, with dark stretches of woodland pressing in around them and in places reaching between the districts. Roads link it south to the city and north into the wooded countryside of the isthmus.
The town grew from a military settlement, and its layout reflects planned growth more than a slow medieval accumulation. Blocks of apartment buildings stand in orderly groups, separated by green space and by the forest itself. Small streams and marshy low ground add irregular shapes, as they do across much of this part of Leningrad Oblast.
