Skövde sits in Västra Götaland between Sweden's two largest lakes, Vänern and Vättern. The flat-topped mountain Billingen rises directly west of the town. On the map, Billingen appears as a large, mostly street-free area, and Skövde spreads east from its foot with a compact centre, residential districts and industrial zones along the railway.
The town is known as an industrial and military centre. Volvo has long had a major engine plant here, and Skövde has been a garrison town for generations. It is also home to the University of Skövde.
