Slagelse is one of the oldest market towns in Denmark, set in the farmland of western Zealand. From above, the old centre forms a compact core of narrow streets around St. Michael's Church, with ring roads and newer districts wrapping around it. A few kilometres to the west lies Trelleborg, one of the Viking-age ring fortresses built around the late tenth century.
