Sneek Map Poster & Print
Sneek lies in the Frisian lake district in the north of the Netherlands, and water defines its shape. The old centre is enclosed by a nearly continuous ring of canals that follow the line of former fortifications, with narrower waterways and quays cutting through it. Newer districts spread out beyond the ring, and to the east the broad Sneekermeer opens up.
The town's best-known landmark is the Waterpoort, a brick water gate from the early seventeenth century that spans one of the canals and has become a symbol of Friesland. Every summer Sneek also hosts Sneekweek, one of the largest inland sailing events in Europe, when the lake fills with boats.
