Solonópole is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in Brazil's semi-arid sertão. Seen from above the town is compact, with a small grid of streets around a central square and church. Rural roads then run out across dry country, where fences and tracks mark out properties and small settlements.
Water is the main theme of any map of this region. Across the sertão, communities have built açudes, dammed reservoirs that hold the rainy-season runoff through the long dry months.
