Supaul lies in northern Bihar, on the wide alluvial plain of the Kosi River, not far from the border with Nepal. The land is almost perfectly flat, and from above it is dominated by fields, small channels and scattered villages. The town is a compact cluster of streets set along main roads and a railway line across the plain.
The Kosi is known for shifting its course and flooding. Long embankments have been built to contain it, and on the map these appear as straight, deliberate lines across the landscape. Supaul district was among the areas hit hardest by the 2008 Kosi flood, and water management still shapes the region more than any other factor.
