Taoyuan sits on the tableland west of Taipei, and its map covers a dense urban core surrounded by a landscape that looks unlike any other in Taiwan. The area is scattered with hundreds of irrigation ponds, dug over centuries to store water for farming, and on a map they appear as small rounded shapes among the fields and roads. The city is home to Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan's main gateway, which sits near the coast to the north-west.
