Teodoro Schmidt is a commune in the Araucanía region of southern Chile, west of Temuco, whose administrative centre is the town of Hualpín. The commune is named after Teodoro Schmidt, the engineer and surveyor who mapped much of Araucanía in the late nineteenth century, a fitting origin for a map poster.
From above, the land is gently rolling and largely rural: fields, forestry plots and scattered farms connected by country roads, with small towns acting as local centres. Toward the west the commune approaches the Pacific coast, where rivers, wetlands and lagoons create softer, more irregular shapes. Mapuche communities have lived in this area for generations.
