Torres Vedras is about fifty kilometres north of Lisbon, in the rolling farmland of the Oeste region. The old town gathers below a hill topped by the remains of a medieval castle. Its streets curve around the slope and then spread into newer districts on the valley floor. The Sizandro River runs past the town toward the coast a short distance to the west.
The name is known well beyond Portugal because of the Lines of Torres Vedras, a chain of forts and earthworks built in 1809 and 1810 on Wellington's orders to protect Lisbon from Napoleon's armies. In Portugal the town is also famous for its carnival, one of the largest and most irreverent in the country, when costumes and satirical floats fill the old streets.
