Turlock sits in Stanislaus County in California's San Joaquin Valley, one of the most productive farming regions in the country. The land is almost completely flat, and the map shows it clearly: a street grid around the downtown and railway, new subdivisions on the edges, and a surrounding rural road network divided into very regular square-mile sections.
Water made that farmland possible. The Turlock Irrigation District, formed in 1887, is often cited as the first irrigation district in California, and its canals still cross the countryside around the city. Turlock is also home to California State University, Stanislaus, whose campus lies on the northeast side of the town.
