Ulliyeri lies in Kozhikode district in northern Kerala, a short way inland from the Malabar coast. Like many Kerala towns, it has no single dense core. From above, houses and small clusters of shops line the roads, and the spaces between are filled with coconut palms, gardens and low fields. The road pattern is loose and branching, following the gentle rise and fall of the land.
This settlement pattern is typical of the region: villages and towns run into one another, and homesteads sit on their own plots among the greenery rather than in tight rows.
