Vaikam Map Poster & Print
Vaikam, often spelled Vaikom, sits on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake in Kottayam district, Kerala. On a map its western edge is defined by water: the broad lake on one side and a web of backwater channels and canals threading inland. The town's streets stay close to that shoreline, with lanes branching off between houses and palms.
At the centre is the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, one of the best-known temples in Kerala. The town is also remembered for the Vaikom Satyagraha of 1924 and 1925, a campaign for the right of all castes to use the roads around the temple. It became a milestone in India's social reform movement.
