Varadero Map Poster & Print
Varadero occupies the Hicacos Peninsula on Cuba's north coast, in Matanzas Province. On a map it is one of the most recognisable shapes in the Caribbean. A thin strip of land extends about twenty kilometres northeast into the sea, with an almost continuous beach along its northern shore and calmer bay waters to the south.
The town sits at the base of the peninsula. It has a compact grid of streets, and a canal, the Laguna Paso Malo, separates the peninsula from the mainland. Further along, the land is taken up largely by resorts, lagoons and nature areas, and the road runs down the middle like a spine. Near the tip, the Xanadu mansion built for the American industrialist Irénée du Pont is one of its best-known landmarks.
