Vendôme stands in the Loir valley in Centre-Val de Loire, northwest of Blois. On the map, the river is unusually complex. The Loir divides into several arms and channels as it passes through town. It wraps around the old centre, turning parts of it into islands linked by bridges.
The historic streets are tight and irregular within these watery bounds. To the south, a steep hill rises with the ruins of the castle at its top, its outline showing above the town. Beyond the river arms, later neighbourhoods and the roads out into the Beauce and the Perche spread out more loosely.
