Vila Nova de Gaia faces Porto across the Douro, and on a map the two cities read as one composition split by water. Gaia's riverfront is a narrow strip of quays and steep lanes. Behind it the land climbs quickly, and the street pattern loosens as it spreads south and west toward the Atlantic shore.
The riverside is known around the world for its port wine lodges, where wine from the Douro valley has long been aged and shipped.
